Our History

The Great Sandhills Railway (GSR) is a Canadian short-line railway company with its head office located in Leader, Saskatchewan established in 2009. Great Sandhills Railway operates a short-line railway in Saskatchewan on a former Canadian Pacific subdivision. The railway serves freight stations in Burstall, Mendham, Leader, Prelate, Sceptre, Porteeve, Lancer, Abbey, Cabri, Battrum, Pennant, Success, Cantuar, and Swift Current. It interlines with the Canadian Pacific Railway in Swift Current and consists of 198 kilometers of track.

Mandate

Great Sandhills Railway strives to be a leader in rail safety within Saskatchewan and Western Canada. Through active support of Operation Lifesaver and the Western Canadian Short Line Association, GSR has adopted a mandate of ‘safety first’.

To provide high quality short line service while supporting the betterment and safety of the short line industry.

Charter

Great Sandhills Railway provides quality short line services to producers and businesses in South Western Saskatchewan, concentrating on high quality and safety to exceed the expectations of customers and the general public.

Strategic Plan

Safety is a key element of GSR’s strategic planning. Both as an objective for all elements of the operation of the railway, and as a key activity.

The following describes GSR’s key activity ‘safety’:

Safety

  • Maintain and exceed provincial and federal safety rules, regulations and requirements.
  • Maintain excellent safety record
  • Contribute in a concrete manner to broader rail safety in Saskatchewan and Western Canada
  1. Take an active and engaged role in Operations Lifesaver.
  2. Contribute to the Western Canadian Short Line Association’s safety activities.
  3. Take part in Rail Safety Week
  4. Develop and operate a Safety Train in cooperation with Operations Lifesaver to improve awareness of rail safety issues (crossings and other) for the general public, with the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities.

3 Year Plan

9961526 Canada Limited’s Three-Year Rail Network Plan indicates where on our line we intend to take steps to discontinue operations in the next three years. This plan is kept up to date and indicates for each of our lines our intent to continue operations.

Pursuant to Section 141 of the Canada Transportation Act, 9961526 Canada Limited has updated it’s Three-Year Rail Network Plan.

This Plan consists of two schedules:
